What is the difference between home remodeling vs home renovation?

While home remodeling and home renovation are used interchangeably colloquially speaking, there is a difference between the two. A home remodeling refers to a change in space and possibly function of that space. For example if you removed a wall to make an open concept look to your dining and living room area that would be considered a remodeling. Whereas a renovation can be thought of as an update to any existing space. If you repaired your floors in the same dining and living room area, that would be considered a part of your home renovation. Renovations can be considered a restoration or repairing of something old or broken.

Should I renovate my house or remodel it to increase its value?

Both can increase the value of your home. It all depends on the kinds of improvements you’d like to make. If your intention is to increase the value of your home, make sure to tell your contractor that is what you’d like to do. Some improvements that are costly may not increase a house’s value to your liking. Let your contractor know that you want to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to home improvement.

Which costs more home renovation or remodeling?

In almost all instances a remodeling would cost more. A renovation is like fixing something that is already there; like painting a room or fixing a broken window. Remodeling would be creating or altering something completely; like building a new fireplace or removing a wall to create an open concept. The latter mentioned projects are usually more costly than renovation or restorations.

How do I budget for a home remodeling?

  1. Set a budget that is right for you.
  2. Speak to multiple contractors and tell them what you want to do.
  3. Ask for a breakdown of each project within the remodeling.
  4. When you select the contractor with the estimate that you like, add another 15 to 20 percent to the entire estimate in case you decide to add on during the project.

That’s a very short version of how you can approach budgeting for your home remodeling. There’s more to it than that. First and foremost always go with a reliable contractor who has good references (speak to them!).  Someone may speak and present themselves well but it’s his or her workmanship and reliability that will be of the most value to you.

Can a home renovation or remodeling hurt my home’s value?

Yes it can. We all want to customize our homes the way we see fit, however you don’t want to over do it. If you don’t plan on living in your house the rest of your life, you don’t want to customize it to the point that you will have a hard time finding future buyers. Experienced contractors can tell you what will help or hurt your home value.

Are permits necessary for renovations and remodeling?

Based on the area you live in, certain permits may be required by law. You can research this yourself by checking your local laws regarding renovations and remodeling. The contractor you hire should know the permits that need to be filed to be in compliance.
